In recent years, the pharmaceutical legislation has led to outstanding medical advances resulting in dramatic improvements to the quality and safety of life of millions of European patients while at the same time promoting and enhancing research in innovation. Despite the many achievements, there are still many challenges ahead, which can only be overcome by a stimulating exchange with representatives from national governments, European institutions, national competent authorities, industry, healthcare professionals, academia and patient groups, working together towards a shared vision for the future.
In this respect, the conference reviewed past achievements from the history of the EU legislation on pharmaceuticals since its birth in 1965 and debated the present and future role of EU pharmaceutical legislation in protecting the health of citizens in the EU and in the world. The discussion, furthermore, revolved around the means of promoting advances in science, innovation and public health. Many issues were addressed during the seminar, including the topics of access to and safety of medical products, the relationship between regulators and industry and the role of legislation in promoting innovation.
