EBC supports the need to prioritise the rapidly growing challenge of Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that progresses in stages, beginning with a long silent phase before symptoms occur, and the underlying cause in 70% of people with dementia. Dementia, which is not a specific disease but an overall term that describes a group of symptoms, is characterized by a decline in memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to perform everyday activities.

It is estimated that 9.7 million people in Europe alone already live with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. With a rapidly ageing population, it is a growing public health concern worldwide as this number is projected to rise to a staggering 14 million by 2030.

It is clear that we can no longer afford to soft-pedal the agenda of Alzheimer’s disease. Now is the time to address the rapidly growing challenge that Alzheimer’s poses on our society and emphasize the need for increased investment to reduce the burden of this progressive condition. The COVID-19 pandemic showed the need for financial and infrastructural investment in order to respond — timely, equitably and sustainably — to future challenges. This is true for unpredictable events such as COVID-19, but is also for chronic, high prevalence and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.

EBC joins in supporting the message delivered by a trio of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in a new video to raise awareness for the cause:

NEW VIDEO: Brain Awareness Week Outreach Event, Highlights

EBC has just released another video on its YouTube channel, a highlights video of the EBC outreach event held on 16th March 2017 at The European Parliament in Strasbourg. The outreach event was titled: “Expanding Brain Research in Europe: A Societal Need?” and was held in the framework of Brain Awareness Week 2017, a global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research. Every March, BAW unites the efforts of partner organizations worldwide in a celebration of the brain for people of all ages.

Key speakers gave presentations on the topic of brain research from their individual standpoints. The speakers included: Monica Di Luca (Vice President of EBC, and President of FENS), Marion LeBoyer (Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Paris) and Ann Little (President of The European Federation of Neurological Associations, EFNA, deputising for Joke Jaarsma. MEPs Ann Sander and Momchil Nekov hosted the event.

The event was highly successful, with a good showing of MEPs, policymakers, researchers and the general public who openly interacted with each other and the speakers during the hour of open discussion following the presentations.

NEW VIDEO: AF-Stroke Policy Workshop, European Parliament

To kick of Brain Awareness Week (13 – 17 March, 2017) EBC has created and published a new video on our YouTube channel. The video comes from an event organized by EBC and supported by the European Stroke Organisation (ESO), European Academy of Neurology (EAN), AF Association/Arrhythmia Alliance, and Stroke Association for Europe (SAFE). Held on 25 January 2017 at the European Parliament, Brussels, the workshop highlighted the importance of pre-screening and early detection of Atrial Fibrillation to reduce the threat of stroke.

Speakers included an inspiring testimonial from a Stroke Survivor with aphasia and his journey as a Stroke Ambassador, a presentation on the burden of Stroke, Atrial Fibrillation as presented by a Cardiologist and details on the AF awareness campaign Know Your Pulse.
