The Second Phase of the Rethinking Schizophrenia Project Kicks Off!

After the launch of the policy report ‘Rethinking Schizophrenia: Beyond the Voices’ in March 2024, falling under the 1st phase of the Rethinking Schizophrenia project, we are pleased to announce that the second phase, focusing on the schizophrenia care pathway, officially kicks off on the occasion of the European Mental Health Week! The Rethinking Schizophrenia project challenges the status quo and refreshes the European policy debate on people living with schizophrenia, recognises the essential role of social support and encourages multi-stakeholder-driven policy.

According to the World Health Organization, 20 million people worldwide have schizophrenia. There is a need to improve the care of individuals with schizophrenia, but there is an in-depth patient care pathway analysis required to aid the development of concrete strategies for advances in schizophrenia care.

The second phase of the project, Rethinking the Schizophrenia Care Pathway, co-created by the European Brain Council (EBC) and the European Psychiatric Association (EPA), will aim to examine health gains and societal impacts resulting from optimal healthcare interventions in comparison with current care or inadequate treatment and convert data evidence to policy recommendations on how to improve the care pathways. In-depth patient care pathway analysis will be conducted for optimized care and development of concrete strategies. The project covers 9 countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and UK).

Survey on Rethinking the Schizophrenia Care Pathway

Join us in our online survey and support us in better understanding of the care pathway of people from the first episode of psychosis and schizophrenia to long-term care throughout the mental health system in different European countries with a focus on youth and young adults! The survey will help us identify the major problems and defficiencies of the care pathway and how it can be optimised.

We invite all healthcare providers (psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, general practioners, etc.), particularly from the selected countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and UK), to provide their insights on this topic and complete the survey.

It takes approximately 10 minutes to fill in the form. The responses are anonymous and should primarily reflect the situation in your country, your personal experience and opinion. The survey will be open until 31st of August 2024.

EFNA launch ‘Survey of Young Europeans with Neurological Conditions’

This Brain Awareness Week, The European Federation of Neurological Associations (EFNA) has launched a Survey of Young Europeans with Neurological Conditions: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EFNA-YS

The objective of this survey is to gain an understanding of the biggest issues affecting participants in their daily lives and also to learn about their relationships with and opinion of patient groups.

Information gathered from this survey will be used in the development of EFNA’s future workplans, ensuring that they and their member organisations are working in the best interests of those they represent.

Please help disseminate the survey by sharing it with your network – via email, newsletters and social media – and encourage others to do the same!

Findings from the survey will be published on World Brain Day 2018 (July 22nd) and will be used to raise awareness among the public, health professionals and policy makers.

STOA Report “Technological innovation strategies in substance use disorders” now online

Drug disorders are complex social and health problems that affect millions of people in the EU. In the last two decades, we have witnessed an extraordinary growth in computer and mobile technologies available to the general public. Researchers in the field of drug addiction have started to exploit the growth of the internet and new technologies, and an increasing number of interventions designed to promote changes in substance use disorders are now available.

The EBC co-conducted and co-authored study includes an extensive critical literature review on the potential of new technologies for drug addiction management. A survey among European experts in the field of addiction was also carried out. New technologies have the potential to provide parallel/alternative instruments of information, prevention and treatment for substance use disorders. They have the capacity to reach populations that have not traditionally been in treatment. Despite encouraging progress, new technologies need to be evaluated with caution. Across research studies, there are methodological difficulties, such as a lack of common definitions, selection biases and inappropriate research designs, which require further investigation. To date, new technologies have the potential to affect, and perhaps deeply transform, existing models of health care delivery in the field of addiction.
