The 2026 Congress motto will be “Mental Health: Improving Care and Expanding Horizons”, emphasising the need to improve mental healthcare across all contexts and for every citizen living in Europe. “Expanding Horizons” underscores the importance of strengthening collaboration with allied professionals and including experts by experience and carers in the improvement of mental healthcare.

The Congress will provide an excellent opportunity to share clinical knowledge, advance education, and discuss research opportunities in the areas of prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, as well as in the promotion of mental health in the general population.

The European Psychiatric Association includes 44 National Psychiatric Associations, representing more than 80,000 mental health professionals across Europe. In addition to its 23 Scientific Sections, the Associations also includes several Committees and Task Forces dedicated to addressing key challenges in mental health. Participating in the 2026 Congress will be a unique opportunity to gain new insights, optimise patient care, and expand professional networks.

To take on this grand challenge, a coordinated, sustainable, and holistic research and innovation initiative, the European Partnership for Brain Health, is envisaged and will begin in January 2026 as a major joint effort of the European Commission, Member States and Associated Countries in collaboration with international partners. By capitalising on existing initiatives, synergies will be formed and links with all relevant stakeholders in the brain health sector and beyond will be strengthened to increase and align efforts and funding. This session will explore the goals and reasons behind the planned Partnership – and why it’s incredibly timely – as well as the expected impact (in terms of research investment, interventions and care), the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda and how the EP BrainHealth will pave the way towards an overall (brain) healthier society.

The e-poster EPP178 will be presented from 12:30 – 13:15 on 6 April 2025 in the e-poster area (station 13).

The e-poster will feature the second phase of the Rethinking schizophrenia project, co-created by the European Brain Council (EBC) and the European Psychiatric Association (EPA), and will aim to examine health gains and societal impacts resulting from optimal healthcare interventions in comparison with current care or inadequate treatment. Additionally, this projects convert data evidence to policy recommendations on how to improve the care pathways.

With a typical onset during late adolescence or early adulthood, schizophrenia requires lifelong treatment, combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Early symptom recognition and timely interventions can greatly enhance functional recovery, however recent reports have identified significant gaps in access to timely assessment and shared decision-making, compounded by the unprecedented demand for mental healthcare among young people. Such high demands create challenges for health care services in delivering not only timely and evidence-based care but also safe and person-centred, as recommended by the World Health Organization. There is a need to improve prevention and care of young individuals with first episode psychosis (the onset of schizophrenia) to safely and effectively transition between various types of care tailored according to individual needs.

To address these issues, the Rethinking Schizophrenia project is conducting an analysis of patient care pathways across nine European countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK). This project aims to put forward an in-depth patient care pathway analysis in order to define specific strategies to advance the prevention and treatment of schizophrenia. Findings will inform policy recommendations to enhance care pathways for young individuals experiencing first-episode psychosis.

While substantially diverse across healthcare segments and ill-health conditions, excess healthcare costs associated with the increased risks of physical comorbidities linked to mental health disorders have been found to be between 37% to 110%, calling for more tailored policy considerations towards integrated care options. Furthermore, the economic value of life years lost due to morbidity and mortality linked to mental health disorders exceeds their cost impact: recently, this was valued as between 6% and 7.7% of GDP in Europe, suggesting potentially large returns on investment from improved prevention, detection, and treatment of mental health problems.

Effective and cost-effective early detection and interventions exist, however there are numerous unmet needs along the mental health care pathways. Navigating the mental health services system is often complex for patients and families due to fragmented or disrupted services (in-patient and outpatient care) and discontinuity of care (transition between child and adult mental health services, for example). Policies and programmes to prevent and mitigate the negative impacts on schooling, employment, families and risky behaviors are also paramount. Nevertheless, spill-over effects to other economic sectors (work, education, legal system, informal care) are usually neglected in economic burden and value assessments. Current value estimates usually also remain limited in terms of comprehensive outcome assessment for patients and families, and comprehensive and comparable societal cost impact assessment due to the lack of relevant data.

There is a clear need to look at value-based healthcare as the desired solution or path forward in improving health systems. Achieving high value for patients must become the overarching goal of health care delivery, with value defined as the health outcomes achieved per money spent. The approach towards more comprehensive mental health care models critically intertwines wider patient and societal outcomes with efficient spending of resources. Reinforcing this should lead to both better care for patients and a more sustainable framework for payers in Europe. Speakers of the session and experts involved in the Value of Treatment project, coordinated by the European Brain Council, will focus on early detection and continuity of care for persons living with selected mental disorders. The research project – which combines care pathways analysis and economic analyses – included three case studies related to anorexia nervosa (AN), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). It aimed to identify treatment gaps, assess the potential outcomes and costs of optimised care, and provide policy recommendations.
