SUMMARY:Federated Learning for Neurodegenerative Disease Research: A New Path to Risk Reduction and Better Care
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday 16th of May for a webinar titled “Federated Learning for Neurodegenerative Disease Research: A New Path to Risk Reduction and Better Care”. This is a joint webinar involving LETHE\, BRAINTEASER and HEREDITARY projects. \nIt will begin providing the audience with an introduction to federated learning and then dive into examples of how federated learning is being used in the three projects. There will be a chance at the end of the webinar for the audience to participate and ask our panellists questions. Don’t miss out\, sign up now! \nAgenda:\n– Welcome and Introduction – Natalia Allegretti\, Senior Innovation Projects Manager (ECHAlliance) – 5 mins\n– Introduction to Federated Learning and the Lethe Example – Hannes Hilberger\, Researcher (FH JOANNEUM) – 15 minutes\n– Bridging Projects: How Federated Learning in HEREDITARY project can advance Brainteaser AI models – Umberto Manera\, Assistant Professor (University of Turin) – 15 minutes\n– Questions from the audience – 25 minutes \nRegister NowMeet the speakers\nNatalia Allegretti \nSenior Innovation Projects Manager \nECHAlliance \nHannes Hilberger \nResearcher \nFH JOANNEUM \nUmberto Manera \nAssistant Professor \nUniversity of Turin \nLearn more about the EU projects\nLETHE is leading to a more personalized risk factor prevention for persons in the initial stages of cognitive decline\, thereby empowering people to an active and healthy lifestyle. Expansion of  digital-enabled health preventive approaches\, by reaching out to large populations\, can save healthcare systems costs on expensive traditional interventions and confer benefits for the wider society. \nBRAINTEASER is a data science project that seeks to exploit the value of big data\, including those related to health\, lifestyle habits\, and environment\, to support patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multiple sclerosis and their clinicians. Taking advantage of cost-efficient sensors and apps\, BRAINTEASER will integrate large\, clinical datasets that host both patient-generated and environmental data. \nHEREDITARY aims to improve disease detection\, treatment response preparation\, and medical knowledge exploration through an integrated framework that incorporates diverse health data\, including genetics\, while ensuring privacy compliance.

SUMMARY:Mental Health Summit: Prevention and Recovery in Modern Society
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of Mental Health Week\, starting on May 19\, 2025\, Dr. András Kulja\, MEP\, Vice Chair of ENVI\, and SANT Vice Coordinator\, together with MEP Zoltán Tarr\, Head of Delegation\, and CULT Vice-Coordinator\, will host a two-day summit dedicated to mental health and recovery in modern society. Following the SANT Committee’s mission to Ukraine on the topic of mental health\, MEPs will report back to the European Parliament to share their experiences and insights from the field. \nPrevention and Recovery in Modern Society\nThe summit will bring together policymakers\, mental health professionals\, cultural leaders\, and civil society organisations to explore how mental health challenges can be addressed in a rapidly changing and crisis-affected world. It will particularly emphasise support for vulnerable populations\, trauma-informed rebuilding\, and the role of culture and the arts in mental health recovery. \nThe discussions will aim to contribute to the ongoing EU policy debate on mental health as a societal priority\, following the Commission’s Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health. A key outcome of the summit will be a renewed call for a dedicated EU Mental Health Action Plan\, with a specific focus on youth.  \nThe first day of the summit (May 19) will focus on the mental health impact of war and crisis\, addressing support for at-risk populations and strategies for resilience and trauma-informed rebuilding. The second day (May 20) will explore preventive measures\, the role of cultural activities in mental well-being\, and sex-specific mental health concerns\, particularly focusing on women’s mental health.  \nKey MEPs from the SANT\, CULT\, and FEMM and HOUS Committees will join the discussions.  Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi (Health and Animal Welfare) is invited to deliver a keynote speech on the opening panel on Monday 19 (tbc). Commissioner Glenn Micallef (Intergenerational Fairness\, Youth\, Culture and Sport) will deliver a keynote speech on May 20. The programme is co-curated with Culture Action Europe as part of the “CARE: Culture for Mental Health” project and is supported by the European Union and the European Cultural Foundation. \nEvening reception\nThe summit will conclude with a closing reception\, co-organised by MEP András Kulja\, and The Parliament Magazine\, emphasising the need for an EU Action Plan on Youth Mental Health. Focusing on cross-sector collaboration\, policy innovation\, and increased investment\, the reception will underscore the importance of placing youth mental health at the forefront of the EU’s legislative agenda. Together\, we will reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that young people across Europe have access to the support and resources they need to thrive. \nEBC is pleased to be part of the closing reception where Frédéric Destrebecq\, EBC Executive Director\, will deliver a keynote speech on this occasion. You can register your interest for the closing reception here. \nDiscover the programmeRegister nowRegister your interest for the Closing Reception

SUMMARY:Advancing Global Health: Science Agenda for the World Health Assembly (WHA)
DESCRIPTION:The World Health Assembly (WHA)\, taking place in May 2025\, presents an important opportunity to emphasize the role of science and research in driving progress on global health priorities. This year’s agenda highlights the urgent need to advance universal health coverage (UHC)\, reduce health inequities\, respond to both emerging and ongoing disease challenges\, and reinforce health systems worldwide. \nAchieving these aims will require putting scientific progress to work and encouraging greater collaboration across sectors. Over the past decade\, research and innovation have significantly improved health outcomes\, through better diagnostics\, treatments\, and prevention. But to meet the ambitious targets of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals\, particularly SDG 3 on good health and well-being\, stronger partnerships are essential to turn scientific insights into meaningful action. \nAs part of the WHA programme\, Frédéric Destrebecq (European Brain Council\, Belgium)\, along with key notable speakers\, will take part in an Interactive Q&A Session from 14:00 to 14:30\, covering key topics such as: \n\nFinancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC)\nBuilding resilient health systems\nReducing health access inequalities\nAligning health investments with climate priorities\nSupporting innovation through strategic funding\n\nAs global health challenges grow more complex\, this gathering serves as a timely reminder that inclusive science\, strategic investment\, and strong partnerships are key to building a healthier\, more equitable future for all. \nFind Out More
