SUMMARY:Rethinking Schizophrenia: Care Pathways | European Congress of Psychiatry
DESCRIPTION:EBC is pleased to have an e-poster viewing “Rethinking Pathways: Innovative Approaches to Identify Individuals Experiencing First-Episode Psychosis and Connect Them to Care” at the upcoming European Congress of Psychiatry\, set to take place on 5-8 April 2025 in Madrid (Spain). The e-poster EPP178 will be presented from 12:30 – 13:15 on 6 April 2025 in the e-poster area (station 13). \nThe e-poster will feature the second phase of the Rethinking schizophrenia project\, co-created by the European Brain Council (EBC) and the European Psychiatric Association (EPA)\, and will aim to examine health gains and societal impacts resulting from optimal healthcare interventions in comparison with current care or inadequate treatment. Additionally\, this projects convert data evidence to policy recommendations on how to improve the care pathways. \nWith a typical onset during late adolescence or early adulthood\, schizophrenia requires lifelong treatment\, combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Early symptom recognition and timely interventions can greatly enhance functional recovery\, however recent reports have identified significant gaps in access to timely assessment and shared decision-making\, compounded by the unprecedented demand for mental healthcare among young people. Such high demands create challenges for health care services in delivering not only timely and evidence-based care but also safe and person-centred\, as recommended by the World Health Organization. There is a need to improve prevention and care of young individuals with first episode psychosis (the onset of schizophrenia) to safely and effectively transition between various types of care tailored according to individual needs. \nTo address these issues\, the Rethinking Schizophrenia project is conducting an analysis of patient care pathways across nine European countries (Belgium\, Denmark\, France\, Germany\, Hungary\, Italy\, Poland\, Spain\, and the UK). This project aims to put forward an in-depth patient care pathway analysis in order to define specific strategies to advance the prevention and treatment of schizophrenia. Findings will inform policy recommendations to enhance care pathways for young individuals experiencing first-episode psychosis. \nPavel MohrVice-President\, Czech Psychiatric AssociationGraduated from the Medical Faculty\, Charles University Prague in 1990 (M.D.); in 2001 obtained his Ph.D. in Neurosciences.\, in 2015 was appointed a Professor of Psychiatry at the Charles University in Prague. SUMMARY:Joint Workshop at EPA 2025: "No Health Without Brain Health & the Brain Health Mission: Raising Awareness & Putting the Brain on the Top of the Policy Agenda"
DESCRIPTION:Joint Workshop at EPA 2025 Congress: “No Health Without Brain Health & the Brain Health Mission: Raising Awareness & Putting the Brain on the Top of the Policy Agenda” \nThe European Psychiatric Association (EPA) community is growing fast\, as testified by the increasing number of members and the numerous activities the EPA is organising. Many of the community members are young and clinically oriented\, and it is this clinical orientation that is highlighted in the motto of the 2025 Madrid Congress “Towards Real-World Solutions in Mental Health”. Next to excellent and ground-breaking research\, one of the core interests of EPA is the clinical translation of these findings and the sharing of good practices. \nEBC President Suzanne Dickson will speak during a joint workshop on ‘No Health Without Brain Health & the Brain Health Mission: Raising Awareness & Putting the Brain on the Top of the Policy Agenda’. This workshop represents a collaboration between EPA\, the European Academy of Neurology (EAN)\, the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) and EBC. Other speakers of this workshop include Peter Falkai\, EBC Treasurer\, Paul Boon\, Past EAN President and Tomás Ryan\, Neuroscientist at Trinity College Dublin. \nSociety is facing brain challenges like never before — improving the health and wellbeing of citizens has become the top priority for many governments and brain health should not be left behind. The No Health Without Brain Health campaign aims to put a spotlight on the urgency of addressing the growing burden\, the socioeconomic impacts and the need to significantly increase investment in the brain R&D space. You can learn more about the No Health Without Brain Health campaign here. \nSimilarly\, EAN’s Brain Health Mission has several aims:\n • Ensure a basic understanding of how to optimise brain health is available to the public through all stages of their lives and the lives of their loved ones\n • Support & disseminate public health strategies which can make a meaningful and long-term impact on brain health\n • Boost the workforces of healthcare professionals within neurology\, as well as professionals dedicated to mental health\, to ensure patients and those affected by brain disorders receive the care and support they need and deserve.\nTo achieve this\, effective prevention\, early detection\, and intervention strategies are equally important\, as well as investments in research\, innovative treatments\, and integrated healthcare systems. The collaborative Brain Health Mission is rooted in evidence-based research that underscores the importance of a holistic approach to brain and mental health\, and to the needs of people\, patients\, and their carers and families. \nThis workshop will take place in Auditoriom A from 15:00 – 16:30 on Monday April 7\, 2025.\nWorkshop Agenda:\nChairs: Paul Boon & Peter Falkai \n15:00 – 15:16: Brain and mental: two sides of the same coin (Speaker: Peter Falkai\, Treasurer\, EBC)\n15:16 – 15:32: The Brain Health Mission: a collaborative to raise awareness (Speaker: Paul Boon\, Past President\, EAN)\n15:32 – 15:48: How to develop a national brain strategy – The Norwegian Way (Speaker: Jana Middelfart-Hoff\, Treasurer\, European Academy of Neurology) \n15:48 – 16:04: Discovery Neuroscience and Brain Health (Speaker: Tomás Ryan\, Neuroscientist\, Trinity College Dublin)\n16:04 – 16:20: No Health Without Brain Health: Prioritising Brain Health in the European Union to Leave No One Behind (Speaker: Suzanne Dickson\, President\, EBC)\n16:20 – 16:30: Q&A \nSuzanne L. Tradycyjne podejście do schizofrenii koncentruje się przede wszystkim na interwencjach w zakresie zdrowia psychicznego\, jednak pojawiające się dowody podkreślają potrzebę przyjęcia perspektywy zdrowia mózgu – takiej\, która uznaje wzajemne oddziaływanie między uwarunkowaniami biologicznymi\, psychologicznymi i społecznymi. \nCelem okrągłego stołu jest omówienie i przedstawienie ustaleń dotyczących poszczególnych krajów\, ilustrujących bariery i najlepsze praktyki we wdrażaniu kompleksowych ścieżek opieki w Polsce. \nPrzyjmując podejście biopsychospołeczne i integrując zdrowie mózgu z polityką krajową\, możemy zmienić paradygmat opieki nad schizofrenią – zapewniając wcześniejsze interwencje\, lepsze wyniki leczenia i lepszą jakość życia młodych pacjentów w całej Europie. \nDebata odbędzie się 5 czerwca 2025 r. w Pałacu Staszica w Warszawie (sala okrągłego stołu) ul. Nowy Świat 72\, w godz. 9:00 – 13:00. Debata została objęta patronatem Polskiego Towarzystwa Psychiatrycznego. \nDowiedz się więcej o projekciePrzeczytaj raport politycznySzczegóły praktyczne\nData: 5 czerwca 2025 \nGodzina: 09:00–13:00 (czasu warszawskiego) \nMiejsce: Administracja Pałacu Staszica\, Nowy Świat 72\, 00-330 Warszawa\, Polska \nRejestracja: Prześlij ten formularz\, aby zgłosić chęć udziału w wydarzeniu. SUMMARY:Rethinking Alzheimer's Disease: From Diagnosis to Care | Congress of the European Academy of Neurology
DESCRIPTION:The main outcomes of the second phase of the Rethinking Alzheimer’s disease project will be presented by Prof. Dr. Sebastiaan Engelborghs\, Full professor of neurology and neurosciences (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and a co-chair of the Scientific Panel Dementia and Cognitive Disorders (European Academy of Neurology) in a scientific theatre Rethinking Alzheimer’s Disease: From Diagnosis to Care at the Congress of the European Academy of Neurology in Helsinki. The session will take place on 24 June 2025 from 10:35-11:05 (Helsinki time). \nWe are at a historical crossroads in the management of Alzheimer’s disease\, with new treatments becoming available in various countries. For the first time in history\, science is delivering new\, potentially disease-modifying treatments for devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. However\, the current healthcare system and regulatory frameworks do not easily allow the implementation of such innovations\, even for the subset of people living with Alzheimer’s who would be eligible. \nThe ‘Rethinking Alzheimer’s Disease: From Diagnosis to Care’ Perspective Paper was launched in September 2024 on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s month. This Perspective Paper does not merely document the status quo but challenges it – motivating the reader to rethink how Alzheimer’s Disease is addressed. By offering a comprehensive review of current practices\, identifying gaps and barriers\, and proposing policy recommendations\, this report seeks to reshape the Alzheimer’s disease healthcare pathway in ways that enhance outcomes and quality of life for all involved\, and thereby reduce the impact on society. \n \nProf. Dr. Sebastiaan Engelborghs\nFull professor of neurology and neurosciences at Vrije Universiteit Brussel\, Co-Chair of the EAN Scientific Panel Dementia and Cognitive Disorders  \nSebastiaan Engelborghs is full professor of neurology and neurosciences at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)\, chair of research group NEUR (Neuroprotection & Neuromodulation)\, co-director of the VUB Center for Neurosciences (C4N) and chairman of the neurology department of the VUB university hospital (UZ Brussel). He is co-founder and co-director of the transdisciplinary memory clinic in UZ Brussel\, Brussels Integrated Center for Brain and Memory (Bru-BRAIN). He as well is full professor of neurosciences and neurochemistry at University of Antwerp. \nSebastiaan Engelborghs is board certified in clinical neurology (2001) and neurological revalidation medicine (2009). He achieved a PhD in medical sciences in 2004 and has interdisciplinary expertise in clinical neurology and neurosciences\, including electrophysiology\, neuroimaging\, biochemistry\, neurogenetics and neuropathology. Both clinically and with regard to research\, he is specialized in neurodegenerative brain disorders that cause dementia. He has built up expertise in clinical trials for AD and related disorders for more than 25 years and was PI as well as national or global coordinating physician for several clinical trials\, as well as being involved in the design of some of these clinical trials. Sebastiaan Engelborghs serves as co-chair of the European Alzheimer Disease Consortium (EADC)\, as co-chair of the dementia and cognitive disorders scientific panel (SP) of European Academy of Neurology (EAN) and is vice-president of the Belgian Dementia Council (BeDeCo). He is co-inventor of one patent and is academic promoter of two spin-off companies\, Epilog and ADx Neurosciences. \nHe is (co-)author on 432 PubMed-cited papers in international peer-reviewed journals and 19 book chapters which results in 35.228 citations without self-citations\, and a h-index of 82.

SUMMARY:Headway – A New Roadmap in Brain Health: Focus Epilepsy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a high-level policy event co-hosted by MEP Romana Jerković (S&D\, Croatia) and MEP Tomislav Sokol (EPP\, Croatia): “Headway – A New Roadmap in Brain Health: Focus Epilepsy”. The event will take place on Wednesday\, 2 July 2025\, from 14:30 to 16:30 CEST at the European Parliament\, Room SPAAK 4B1\, in Brussels. \nAs Europe grapples with ongoing geopolitical instability and the lasting impact of recent health crises\, building long-term resilience requires more than just economic reform. It demands a renewed focus on brain health. Prioritising neurological well-being is not only key to improving individual quality of life but also essential for preserving Europe’s social cohesion\, economic innovation\, and global competitiveness. \nThis event will bring together policymakers\, clinicians\, researchers\, patient advocates and industry leaders to address epilepsy\, one of the most common yet under-recognised neurological conditions in Europe. Despite affecting millions\, up to 40% of epilepsy patients still lack access to adequate treatment. The discussion will emphasise the urgent need for inclusive\, data-driven policy and integrated care pathways\, while situating epilepsy within the broader brain health agenda. \nDuring the event\, the latest edition of the Headway report will be presented\, developed by Angelini Pharma in partnership with TEHA Group. Since its inception in 2017\, the Headway initiative has championed a cross-sectoral approach to brain health\, addressing systemic challenges across healthcare\, education\, and the workplace. \nThe agenda will spotlight expert perspectives on the implementation of the WHO Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders across Europe. It will bring together a diverse range of voices\, including international patient organizations\, leading clinicians\, and senior EU policymakers. Notable contributions will come from figures such as MEP Vytenis Andriukaitis (S&D\, Lithuania)\, MEP András Tivadar Kulja (EPP\, Hungary)\, and MEP Aurelijus Veryga (ECR\, Lithuania)\, who will share their insights on how to translate global frameworks into concrete action within European health systems. \nThe European Brain Council (EBC) looks forward to being part of the event. Frédéric Destrebecq\, EBC Executive Director will take part in a roundtable discussion “Making Brain Health (and Epilepsy) a Public Priority in the EU” where he will share his insights on how brain health can remain at the top of the EU policy agenda. \nThe session will conclude with remarks from Agnese Cattaneo\, Chief Medical Officer of Angelini Pharma\, and will be moderated by Jennifer Baker\, renowned EU affairs presenter and journalist. \nDiscover the programmeRegister now

SUMMARY:Brain Health at the Science Summit of the 80th United Nations General Assembly
DESCRIPTION:Programme of day 1Programme of day 2As part of the Global Brain Coalition\, the European Brain Council (EBC) will host a high-level side event in the framework of the Science Summit at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York City on 24-26 September 2025. \nIt is estimated that more than three billion people currently live with a neurological condition and 970 million with a mental health disorder worldwide. These conditions represent a high individual\, social and economic burden and contribute immensely to the global burden of disease – in fact\, as of 2024\, neurological conditions alone are now the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. The associated costs are placing mounting pressure on national fiscal budgets. Demographic changes—including shrinking working-age populations—are also reducing tax bases and exerting downward pressure on productivity and long-term economic growth. \nThe growing urgency to address this burden has catalysed a global movement to position brain health not only an issue of health or research\, but as a social and fiscal public policy issue as well\, with brain capital as a business and national competitiveness imperative. These priorities are now emerging as central to global conversations around public policy\, economic development\, and innovation. \n \nOver the last several years\, the need to place brain health and brain capital on the global agenda has gained critical momentum through a series of high-level convenings\, pilot programs\, and public-private partnerships. These efforts include regional breakthroughs such as Houston’s emerging brain health ecosystem; national brain health strategies now adopted by more than 20 countries; European Union initiatives led by the European Brain Council (EBC); and global coordination efforts such as the Brain Days at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)\, the Brain Health House at Davos\, the World Economic Forum’s Brain Economy Action Forum\, and the Business Collaborative for Brain Health. The 2025 Brain Days at UNGA80 build on this foundation—offering a strategic inflection point to sustain and scale action. This gathering represents another step forward in uniting science\, policy\, and economic stakeholders around a shared mission: to advance brain health as a driver of human and societal resilience. \nFor privacy reasons YouTube needs your permission to be loaded. For more details\, please see our Privacy Policy.I AcceptFor privacy reasons YouTube needs your permission to be loaded. For more details\, please see our Privacy Policy.I Accept2025 is a pivotal year to deepen and broaden this agenda\, particularly at the global level. Despite times of change and unrest\, momentum is building at international policy and investment level\, with the United Nations (UN) and its agencies entering a crucial period of strategic planning\, work programme\, and milestone-setting and program design for the post-2030 era. We have before us an opportunity to transform momentum into coordinated global action. The additional insights gathered through UNGA80’s Brain Health Days will directly inform a Global Brain Health Action Plan aligned with upcoming milestones\, including the G20 health track\, the Lausanne Workshop XII\, Davos 2026 as well as key political milestones at the regional and national levels\, such as the launch of a European Partnership for Brain Health in 2026. \nThe topics of science collaboration and research funding remain vital amidst government changeups\, multiannual funding frameworks and timelines ending as well as ongoing discussions for post-2030 budget lines. Amidst instability of national (i.e. UK\, China\, Japan\, US) and international (i.e. EU\, DFC’s\, WHO) funding\, there are also opportunities for growth and diversification. \nProgramme SkeletonMorning of 25 September: Brain Health & Research Across Borders\nClick here to access the programme. \nAfternoon of 25 September: Brain Health & Research Across Society\nClick here to access the programme. \nMorning of 26 September: Brain Health Across Generations\nClick here to access the programme. \nAfternoon of 26 September: Future of Brain Health Policy\nClick here to access the programme. \nIn terms of brain health and public health policy\, the UN will convene their High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable diseases in the days surrounding the event\, where Heads of States and Government will set a new vision to prevent and control NCDs towards 2030 and 2050 through a political declaration to be decided during the UN General Assembly (UNGA80)\, providing a unique opportunity to adopt a new\, ambitious and achievable political declaration on NCDs towards 2050. \nIn this context\, the Science Summit at UNGA80 offers a rich and unique opportunity to solidify brain health and brain capital as a global development priority— anchored in science\, fiscal necessity\, and economic resilience. The work initiated here will inform and propel a Brain Economy Action Plan to be advanced at Davos 2026\, and feed into the many ongoing initiatives dedicated to improved outcomes in the brain space and a greater recognition of brain science and brain health in our society. \nAlongside science collaboration and prioritization of brain health\, the 2025 Brain Days at UNGA80 will touch on a wide variety of topics\, demonstrating why we must remain steadfast in our work towards strengthening international brain research and addressing brain health across the life course and within all aspects of our lives (brain development\, built environment\, workplace mental health\, etc.) in order to prepare for a brain healthier future for us and generations to come. \nfull programmeRegisterGlobal Brain Campaign

SUMMARY:Towards a European Partnership for Brain Health: Priority Setting for the Future of EU-Funding | 38th European College of Neuropsychopharmacology Congress
DESCRIPTION:The fireside chat Towards a European Partnership for Brain Health: Priority Setting for the Future of EU-Funding will take place on 11 October 2025 from 16:40-17:25 at the 38th European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) Annual Congress in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). \nBrain disorders – neurological and mental alike – are widespread\, with approximately 60% of the European population living with a neurological condition and one in six citizens affected by mental ill-health. Due to such a high disease burden and considering the associated costs for society\, the EU and its Member States have made considerable investments in brain research leading to a significant increase of initiatives in this area. \nEffective and efficient collaboration and cooperation is often identified as a key success factor to achieve the full impact of brain research for the wider brain community. There is a constant need for strengthening the information flow and accelerating the exchange of experience on the on-going and future projects as well as maintaining continuous dialogue between all the stakeholder groups and initiatives to allow that objectives are aligned\, and needs are met.\nTo emphasise the significance of brain health and research\, the European Union (EU) has undertaken significant measures to enhance brain research initiatives. With the European Partnership for Brain Health to launch in 2026\, there is a mission to support brain health research and innovation by strengthening transnational collaboration and alignment to enhance understanding of the brain and to promote the translation of results into tailored solutions for prevention\, diagnosis\, treatment and care accessible for all. \nIn this session\, our speakers will discuss the Partnership’s goals and how best to ensure all relevant communities are involved and empowered by the initiative. The audience will be encouraged to participate actively and play a role in the discussion. \nLearn more about the Coordination and Support Action (CSA) BrainHealthMeet the Speakers\nFrédéric Destrebecq \nExecutive Director\, European Brain Council \nSuzanne Dickson \nPresident\, European Brain Council \nAndrei Reif \nFull Professor of Psychiatry\, University Hospital Frankfurt
