SUMMARY:Rare Disease Day 2025 | Towards a Rare Brain Disease Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:The main purpose of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness about rare diseases and their impact on the lives of those affected. In the continuity of the European Brain Council’s (EBC) activities on rare brain diseases\, EBC introduced in 2024 the concept of a Rare Brain Disease Ecosystem to engage key stakeholders in the field to identify gaps\, priorities\, and projects in Europe. DicksonPresident\, European Brain CouncilSuzanne L Dickson is a neurobiologist and Professor of Neuroendocrinology at the University of Gothenburg. She graduated with a Ph.D. in Neuroendocrinology from the University of Cambridge in 1993\, where she later became Senior Lecturer in Physiology. She is a leading figure in neuroendocrinology and works within many European Union and international organisations and societies to promote research\, facilitate grant funding and training of Early Career Scientists. Her research into the neurobiology of appetite aims to unravel neurobiological pathways that respond to orexigenic signals\, such as the hormone\, ghrelin\, and that drive feeding behaviours\, not only food intake but also food choice\, food anticipation\, food reward and food motivation. This work involves mostly preclinical studies and includes behavioural tasks\, viral vector mapping\, chemogenetics and RNAscope. She is President of the European Brain Council and Secretary of the European College for Neuropsychopharmacology \nElena Moro is Professor of Neurology at Université Grenoble Alpes and at the Department of Psychiatry\, Neurology and Neurological Rehabilitation of CHU Grenoble in France. She graduated in medicine at the University of Trieste\, Italy\, and completed her residency in neurology at the Rome Catholic University. She then went on to complete a fellowship in movement disorders in Grenoble\, France. After receiving her PhD in neurosciences\, she joined the Division of Neurology at Toronto Western Hospital\, Canada\, as medical director of the surgical programme for movement disorders. In 2012\, she moved to Grenoble\, France\, where she is currently director of the Movement Disorders Center and head of the Department of Psychiatry\, Neurology\, Neurological Rehabilitation and Forensic Medicine. \nHer main research is focused on restoring brain function\, especially with deep brain stimulation. To date\, she has published more than 200 papers based on clinical research in movements disorders. Prof. Moro has trained many medical students\, PhD students and neurology fellows. She has previously served on the EAN Board as Treasurer (2018-20) and Secretary General (2020-22). \nElena MoroPresident\, European Academy of NeurologySarah Moon HoweFilmmakerPsychology graduate\, Sarah Moon Howe worked for nearly 10 years with adults with disabilities and mental retardation. Alongside her job\, she leads a filmmaking career. In 2003\, she made based on its archives “Do not tell my mother\,” a documentary unveiled at the 60th Venice Mostra. The trip movie\, takes part in many festivals around the world. The birth of her son\, Jack\, and the announcement of his difficulties will bring it again to record his daily life. From this experience is born “If depressurization” in 2009. “The kangaroo complex” is her third film. Alongside her film activities\, Sarah explores with sound documentary “Living with Medusa” in 2011 and “Channel Strip” in 2013. With these documentaries\, Sarah Moon Howe lays the foundations for a significant work\, the borders of the intimate\, transcending her experience to capture images into sounds. \nVinciane Quoidbach is Public Health and Policy Research Project Manager at the European Brain Council\, specializing in brain health impact assessments\, care and treatment pathway analysis\, and evidence-based policymaking. She is currently affiliated with the University of Warwick\, United Kingdom\, where she is pursuing an MSc in Neuroscience. Prior to her current position\, she served as an Advisor to the Belgian Federal Public Service Health and the Federal Minister of Health’s Cabinet\, where she was responsible for developing public health policies and regulations in the areas of cancer\, chronic diseases\, and rare diseases. She also worked as a Technical Officer at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva\, Switzerland\, within the Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health cluster\, and at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Pretoria\, South Africa\, focusing on health and social development. Vinciane holds a Master’s Degree in Hospital Management from the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health Management from the Manchester Business School. Additionally\, she holds a Master’s Degree in Political Science and European Studies from the University of Antwerp. \nVinciane QuoidbachResearch Project Manager\, European Brain CouncilEnrique Terol Health Counsellor\, Permanent Representation of Spain to the EUEnrique Terol works as Health Counsellor in the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union and represents the interests of Spain in the area of health. He is MD\, specialized in Family and Community Medicine\, MSc and PhD in Public Health and has followed specialisation courses on healthcare management and quality of healthcare. \nHis professional experience includes the clinical practice\, managerial positions as Medical Director and CEO of Primary and Specialised Healthcare in private and public institutions and healthcare planning. He was Deputy General Director of Quality and Health Planning of the Ministry of Health of Spain between 2004 and 2008 in charge of the development inter alia of the Spanish Strategy of ischemic heart disease\, Diabetes\, Mental health\, Rare Diseases and Patient safety. \nHe worked as Health Attaché in the Spanish Permanent Representation to the EU and coordinator of the area of Health in the Spanish Presidency of the EU between 2008 and 2011. From 2011 to 2020\, he worked as Seconded National Expert and as Policy officer in DG SANTE developing the legal and organisational bases for and the set-up and implementation of the European Reference Networks (ERN) for complex and rare diseases under the framework of the Directive of Cross-border Health. Between 2021 and 2022 worked as team leader in the Medical Service of the European Commission. \nSince 2022 he works as Health counsellor at Spanish Permanent Representation and coordinated the Health area during the Spanish Presidency of the EU. \nAlexandra Heumber Perry is the Chief Executive Officer of Rare Diseases International\, the global alliance of Persons Living with a Rare Disease. She has dedicated her entire career to contribute improving healthcare policies to benefit people living with diseases\, with a particular focus in neglected and vulnerable people. She has over 20 years’ experience in global health with demonstrated capabilities in patient advocacy and multi-stakeholder partnership. Since May 2023 a board member of the EuMGA\, the European Myastnenia Gravis Association and since May 2024\, the president of the European Association. Still very active in advocating for the patient community. \nVera Lipkovskaya is a public policy and project officer at NF Patients United\, with over 8 years of experience advocating for patients with rare diseases. She also served as Chief Project Design Officer at an AI company\, where she led the design and implementation of projects across more than 30 countries for various rare diseases and cancers. Through her work\, she advocates for patient-centric approaches in policymaking as well as for greater recognition of the role patient organisations play in shaping the healthcare landscape. A lawyer by training\, she also closely monitors legislative developments that address rare diseases and the unmet needs of patients. \nVera is a co-founder of a successful patient organization and a co-author of the European clinical guidelines on neurofibromatosis (NF). My main interests in clinical activity and in research are rare neurovascular diseases\, both genetic and sporadic one\, fibromuscular dysplasia\, dissections\, small vessel disease and ICH\, cerebral amyloid angiopathy\, acute stroke treatment\, and angiographic techniques. Both in clinical routine and in research I work in a close collaboration with neuroradiologists\, building integrated and dedicated pathways for the management of neurovascular diseases. He oversees relationships with key International and / or pan-European rare disease groups ensuring their meaningful engagement in key initiatives across the therapeutic innovation cycle. \nPrior to joining the pharmaceutical industry\, Walter worked 7 years at the European Patients’ Forum where\, among other things\, he advocated for the recognition of the value of meaningful patient involvement in medicines’ R&D\, contributing to the shaping and implementation of flagship projects and initiatives in this area such as EUPATI and PARADIGM. \nAnna Kole is a public health professional with over 20 years of international experience in health education\, communication\, fundraising\, advocacy and policy making for people living with rare disease and other vulnerable populations. \nShe recently joined UCB pharma in 2022 as Global Patient Engagement Lead for Myasthenia Gravis – meaningful engaging patients and patient associations in the drug development process and driving collaboration with patients and all stakeholders in “Rethinking MG”. \nPrior to joining UCB she helped grow EURORDIS over 15 years in a number of positions. Most recently as Public Health Policy Director\, she led the Rare 2030 Foresight Study to propose recommendations for the future of rare diseases policies in Europe. Previous positions included representing EURORDIS in research consortia (e.g. IRDIRC\, RD Connect\, TREAT NMD) and a range of policy and patient engagement activities at Orphanet and NORD in the US. In her free time\, Anna runs charity sales for patient organizations. \nAnna KoleGlobal Patient Engagement Lead MG\, UCBFrédéric DestrebecqExecutive Director\, European Brain CouncilFrédéric Destrebecq is the Executive Director of the European Brain Council since October 2014. Starting at the LMU and TU Munich (D) with basic research on human peripheral nerve excitability\, he expanded his work in Sydney (AU)\, Graz (A)\, Hannover (D)\, Leuven (B) and Sheffield (UK)\, conceptualising a disturbance of the ER mitochondria calcium cycle as key mechanism in neurodegenerative diseases. \nSince 2007\, he is an independent researcher\, has run a large translational clinic for patients with neuromuscular and motoneuron diseases in Thuringia 2007-2021. \nIn August 2021 he has taken on the position of Chair of Precision Neurology\, Neuromuscular and Motoneuron Diseases at the University of Lübeck\, Germany. He coordinates the global MRI repository of the Neuroimaging Society in ALS and cooperates on a national\, European and global level with motoneuron disease researchers and clinicians to model disease progression and biomarker/neuroimaging driven stratification to facilitate clinical trial development. \nSince Sept. 2023. he is chair of the EU ALS coalition which brings together stakeholders in the ALS field to advise policy makers on decisions improving health care for people living with ALS. \nJulian GrosskreutzChairman\, European ALS CoalitionSameer ZuberiPaediatric Neurologist\, Royal Hospital for Children Sameer Zuberi is Paediatric Neurologist at the Royal Hospital for Children and Honorary Professor\, University of Glasgow. His interests include epilepsy\, neurogenetics and innovation. He leads the Paediatric Neurosciences Research Group in the University of Glasgow and is clinical lead of the Scottish Genetic Epilepsy service.  He is a Board Member & immediate past President of the European Paediatric Neurology Society (EPNS)\, Neurodevelopment Clinical Theme Lead for the Epilepsy Research Institute UK and sits on the Board of the European Brain Council. Other roles have included Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Paediatric Neurology (2015-21 and Chair of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Commission on Classification & Terminology (2013-17). He co-designed vCreate Neuro\, a smartphone video diagnosis and management web-application. Established in Glasgow in 2020 it is now used by >120 services in the UK and internationally. \nI come from a family affected by Huntingtons Disease (HD). My mother developed the disease throughout my adolescence and her disease had huge impact on the entire family. My brother passed away with HD 10 years ago and my sister died last year after suffering from various and steadily growing symptoms for more than 20 years. I have been engaged as a patient advocate and within the association for over 40 years. In 2010 I tested negative for the Huntington gene and learned that I was not at-risk to develop HD. The same year I joined the board of the European Huntington Association and since 2016 I have been the president and CEO. This position enables me to work full time for the community. I am also very much involved in advocacy and the neurology patient community through my position in the board of the European Federation of Neurological Associations (EFNA) since 2019 and have served as President since 2023. When the European Reference Networks was set up as an EU initiative in 2027\, I joined as patient advocate in the network for Rare Neurological Diseases (ERN-RND). A position I still hold and appreciate as the ERN`s are a crucial infrastructure of clinics and expertise in the RD space. \nI am educated as a teacher for people with learning difficulties and disabilities. I have additional university degrees in developmental psychology\, communication\, social skills\, management and innovative processes. \nI live in Kristiansand\, a town in the southern part of Norway together with my husband. \nAstri ArnesenPresident\, European Federation of Neurological AssociationsKailash BhatiaPresident-Elect\, European Academy of NeurologyKailash Bhatia is a Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Department of Clinical and Movement Neuroscience of the Institute of Neurology\, UCL\, Queen Square\, London. \nProf. Bhatia has been an active member of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) over the past 22 years and has served on various committees. He was privileged to receive honorary membership of the MDS in 2021 and was also honored to be invited to deliver the Stanley Fahn Oration in 2022 at the MDS congress in Madrid. He is the current co-chair of the EAN Coordinating Panel on Rare Diseases and served as the special EAN liaison for the EAN/IAN (Indian Academy of Neurology) collaboration in 2021-22. DESCRIPTION:There are around nine million stroke survivors currently living in Europe. Upon being discharged from a hospital\, survivors and their families enter a world where support is usually undefined\, fragmented or non-existent\, and where cultural expectations dramatically impact quality of life and any success of ongoing recovery. SAFE understands the priority and attention given to the acute phase of stroke treatment. Yet\, they believe that every saved life must also be well lived and that saving someone in the acute phase loses worth and significance if that person later dies from the lack of after care. \nFirmly believing that every step of the stroke care pathway matters equally\, SAFE is now putting focus on stroke survivors and their life after stroke challenges\, by organising the second European Life After Stroke Forum (ELASF)\, on 10-11 March 2025 in Prague\, Czech Republic. SUMMARY:EBC Brain Awareness Week Event 2025: Towards the establishment of national brain plans in Europe and beyond
DESCRIPTION:The momentum for national brain strategies is stronger than ever. On 18 March 2025\, the European Brain Council (EBC) held its annual Brain Awareness Week event\, titled “Brain Health Plans Summit: Towards the Establishment of National Brain Plans in Europe and Beyond”. Hosted by MEP Aurelijus Veryga (ECR\, LT)\, Deputy Coordinator of the European Parliament’s Public Health Committee\, the high-level event brought key stakeholders together from across the European Union and beyond to discuss best practices\, challenges\, and opportunities in advancing national brain plans. \nWith brain disorders being the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death in the world\, the need for coordinated national and international action has never been more pressing. While countries such as Switzerland\, Canada\, Norway\, Denmark\, and Finland have already implemented national brain strategies\, many others have set concrete short-term goals or are in the process of crafting their respective plans. The discussions that took place during the Brain Health Plans Summit underscored the importance of treating brain health as a policy priority rather than a fragmented collection of neurological and mental health challenges and sectoral approaches. \nA Global Policy Momentum in National Brain Plan Development\nAfter welcoming words from MEP Aurelijus Veryga and Claudio Bassetti (EBC\, Swiss Brain Health Plan)\, the event kicked off with Tarun Dua’s (World Health Organisation) presentation of the current WHO Action Plans\, which aim at improving the prevention\, treatment\, and management of brain disorders. These plans set out clear policy goals for Member States who committed to reaching them by 2030-2031. Such commitments emphasize the urgent need to establish national strategies and ensure coordinated efforts to reduce the burden posed by brain conditions\, neurological and mental alike. \n©️ Sylvain Crasset. \nBest Practices Outside of the European Union\nEmmanuel Chen (Singapore Memory Aging and Cognition Centre)\, Jennie Young (Canadian Brain Research Strategy)\, Henrik Peersen (Norwegian Brain Council) and Claudio Bassetti took the floor as representatives of countries which have successfully advanced the prioritization of brain health at national level\, to share their experiences in overcoming obstacles\, fostering cross-sectoral collaboration and securing commitment from policymakers. Alfred Njamnshi (BRAIN Initiative) illustrated Cameroon’s leadership in prioritising brain health across all policy areas and demonstrating the economic imperative of investing in brain health to support sustainable growth and innovation through a presentation of the Yaoundé Declaration on Brain Economy and Brain Capital. \nCase Study of the Nordics\, Spain and Poland\nSpain’s ongoing efforts to develop a national brain health strategy were discussed by Mara Dierssen (Spanish Brain Council) and Elvira Vacas Montero (Spanish Epilepsy Federation\, International Bureau for Epilepsy European Region)\, offering insights into the challenges of integrating brain health into national policy while associating people living with a brain condition. Poland’s early steps in leveraging its EU Presidency to establish its own national strategy underscored the importance of political leadership in driving change. Izabella Dessoulavy-Gladysz (Mental Power Foundation)\, Cezary Mazurek (Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center) & Kondrad Rejdak (Medical University of Lublin) also insisted on the crucial role of data and research infrastructures\, and the need to include clinical expertise in community-driven initiatives. The session on the Nordic experiences provided a powerful case study of how regional cooperation can enhance national efforts\, through showcasing examples of national strategies already in place shared by Henrik Peersen\, Mika Martikainen (Finnish Brain Council) and Morten Lorenzen (Danish Brain Council). \n©️ Sylvain Crasset. \nStrengthening the Research and Innovation Ecosystem\nAs brain conditions remain amongst the most complex conditions to understand and treat\, continued research and development in the brain space therefore remain crucial. Karin Hamberg (Lundbeck) illustrated how national initiatives can significantly accelerate research\, drive investment\, and enhance collaboration between stakeholders by presenting Lundbeck’s Lighthouse Life Science. Tomás Ryan (FENS Advocacy Committee)\, Agnese Cattaneo (Angelini Pharma) & Jan Schadrack (Roche) then discussed ways in which the EU could strengthen its efforts to foster the emergence of a European Brain Health Research & Innovation Ecosystem\, particularly through larger-scale initiatives such as the upcoming European Partnership for Brain Health. \nTowards an EU Coordination Plan for the Brain\nA fireside chat between MEP Tomislav Sokol (EPP\, CR) and Elena Moro (European Academy of Neurology) explored the case for an EU Coordination Plan for the Brain\, emphasizing the need for an integrated\, EU-wide approach to research\, policy\, and funding to address the growing burden of brain disorders and work towards brain-healthy societies. SUMMARY:Rethinking Schizophrenia: Care Pathways | European Congress of Psychiatry
DESCRIPTION:EBC is pleased to have an e-poster viewing “Rethinking Pathways: Innovative Approaches to Identify Individuals Experiencing First-Episode Psychosis and Connect Them to Care” at the upcoming European Congress of Psychiatry\, set to take place on 5-8 April 2025 in Madrid (Spain). The e-poster EPP178 will be presented from 12:30 – 13:15 on 6 April 2025 in the e-poster area (station 13). \nThe e-poster will feature the second phase of the Rethinking schizophrenia project\, co-created by the European Brain Council (EBC) and the European Psychiatric Association (EPA)\, and will aim to examine health gains and societal impacts resulting from optimal healthcare interventions in comparison with current care or inadequate treatment. Additionally\, this projects convert data evidence to policy recommendations on how to improve the care pathways. \nWith a typical onset during late adolescence or early adulthood\, schizophrenia requires lifelong treatment\, combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Early symptom recognition and timely interventions can greatly enhance functional recovery\, however recent reports have identified significant gaps in access to timely assessment and shared decision-making\, compounded by the unprecedented demand for mental healthcare among young people. Such high demands create challenges for health care services in delivering not only timely and evidence-based care but also safe and person-centred\, as recommended by the World Health Organization. There is a need to improve prevention and care of young individuals with first episode psychosis (the onset of schizophrenia) to safely and effectively transition between various types of care tailored according to individual needs. \nTo address these issues\, the Rethinking Schizophrenia project is conducting an analysis of patient care pathways across nine European countries (Belgium\, Denmark\, France\, Germany\, Hungary\, Italy\, Poland\, Spain\, and the UK). This project aims to put forward an in-depth patient care pathway analysis in order to define specific strategies to advance the prevention and treatment of schizophrenia. Findings will inform policy recommendations to enhance care pathways for young individuals experiencing first-episode psychosis. \nPavel MohrVice-President\, Czech Psychiatric AssociationGraduated from the Medical Faculty\, Charles University Prague in 1990 (M.D.); in 2001 obtained his Ph.D. in Neurosciences.\, in 2015 was appointed a Professor of Psychiatry at the Charles University in Prague. Since 1991\, prof. Mohr works at the National Institute of Mental Health\, Czechia (formerly the Prague Psychiatric Center)\, currently as the Clinical Director. From 1995 to 1998\, he was a visiting scientist at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research in Orangeburg\, New York. Dr. Mohr is a Professor of Psychiatry at the 3rd Medical Faculty\, Charles University\, teaching pre-graduate medical students in psychiatry and postgraduate students in the PhD program of Neurosciences. Between 2006 and 2009 was a Faculty member of the Vienna School of Clinical Research. Member of the EPA since 2000\, (since 2023 member of the EPA Board\, current Chair of the Psychopharmacology Section\, member of the Section Neurodevelopmental disorders across the lifespan); representative of the Czech Psychiatric Association at the Council of the NPAs EPA; since 2012 member of the European Network Adult ADHD; member of the European Group for Research in Schizophrenia (EGRIS); current Vice-President of the Czech Psychiatric Association (President 2019-2022)\, Board Member of the Czech Neuro-psychopharmacological Society (President 2009-2011). His main research interests are Clinical Psychiatry and Neurosciences; prof. It will particularly emphasise support for vulnerable populations\, trauma-informed rebuilding\, and the role of culture and the arts in mental health recovery. \nThe discussions will aim to contribute to the ongoing EU policy debate on mental health as a societal priority\, following the Commission’s Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health. A key outcome of the summit will be a renewed call for a dedicated EU Mental Health Action Plan\, with a specific focus on youth.  \nThe first day of the summit (May 19) will focus on the mental health impact of war and crisis\, addressing support for at-risk populations and strategies for resilience and trauma-informed rebuilding. The second day (May 20) will explore preventive measures\, the role of cultural activities in mental well-being\, and sex-specific mental health concerns\, particularly focusing on women’s mental health.  \nKey MEPs from the SANT\, CULT\, and FEMM and HOUS Committees will join the discussions.  Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi (Health and Animal Welfare) is invited to deliver a keynote speech on the opening panel on Monday 19 (tbc). The event Beyond Mental Health: A Brain Health Approach to Schizophrenia Prevention and Care\, building on the second and third phase of the Rethinking Schizophrenia Project\, will explore how early intervention\, innovative treatments and social policy reforms can reshape schizophrenia care across Europe. DESCRIPTION:Neurology within Society\nThe Overarching Theme for the EAN Congress 2025 Neurology within Society in Helsinki explores the multifaceted relationship between neurology and society. \nThe theme covers a range of important topics such as the distinction between neurodegeneration and normal aging; economic challenges in European neurology; societal perceptions of neurological disorders; regional variations in neurological management; the impact of modern environmental changes on cognitive functions and dementia development; and the integration of neuroscience techniques into social sciences to address contemporary challenges in learning\, economics\, and societal emergencies.​ \nCombined\, these topics comprise an Overarching Theme that offers insights into the connections between neurology\, society\, and environmental factors\, spanning from the clinical intricacies of neurological disorders to the broader societal implications and the integration of neuroscience in addressing contemporary challenges. Also\, it reflects the importance of brain health and of raising awareness among health care professionals on its connection to society. \nThis Overarching Theme will be the focus of many sessions to suit the interests of all neurologists\, whether clinicians or scientists\, general or specialised neurologists\, from the younger to the more advanced generations. \nEBC Activities at the Congress\nEBC looks forward to being part of the congress again this year. The session will take place on 24 June 2025 from 10:35-11:05 (Helsinki time). \nWe are at a historical crossroads in the management of Alzheimer’s disease\, with new treatments becoming available in various countries. For the first time in history\, science is delivering new\, potentially disease-modifying treatments for devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. However\, the current healthcare system and regulatory frameworks do not easily allow the implementation of such innovations\, even for the subset of people living with Alzheimer’s who would be eligible. \nThe ‘Rethinking Alzheimer’s Disease: From Diagnosis to Care’ Perspective Paper was launched in September 2024 on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s month. This Perspective Paper does not merely document the status quo but challenges it – motivating the reader to rethink how Alzheimer’s Disease is addressed. By offering a comprehensive review of current practices\, identifying gaps and barriers\, and proposing policy recommendations\, this report seeks to reshape the Alzheimer’s disease healthcare pathway in ways that enhance outcomes and quality of life for all involved\, and thereby reduce the impact on society. \n \nProf. Dr. Sebastiaan Engelborghs\nFull professor of neurology and neurosciences at Vrije Universiteit Brussel\, Co-Chair of the EAN Scientific Panel Dementia and Cognitive Disorders  \nSebastiaan Engelborghs is full professor of neurology and neurosciences at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)\, chair of research group NEUR (Neuroprotection & Neuromodulation)\, co-director of the VUB Center for Neurosciences (C4N) and chairman of the neurology department of the VUB university hospital (UZ Brussel). He is co-founder and co-director of the transdisciplinary memory clinic in UZ Brussel\, Brussels Integrated Center for Brain and Memory (Bru-BRAIN). He as well is full professor of neurosciences and neurochemistry at University of Antwerp. \nSebastiaan Engelborghs is board certified in clinical neurology (2001) and neurological revalidation medicine (2009). He achieved a PhD in medical sciences in 2004 and has interdisciplinary expertise in clinical neurology and neurosciences\, including electrophysiology\, neuroimaging\, biochemistry\, neurogenetics and neuropathology. Both clinically and with regard to research\, he is specialized in neurodegenerative brain disorders that cause dementia. He has built up expertise in clinical trials for AD and related disorders for more than 25 years and was PI as well as national or global coordinating physician for several clinical trials\, as well as being involved in the design of some of these clinical trials. Sebastiaan Engelborghs serves as co-chair of the European Alzheimer Disease Consortium (EADC)\, as co-chair of the dementia and cognitive disorders scientific panel (SP) of European Academy of Neurology (EAN) and is vice-president of the Belgian Dementia Council (BeDeCo). He is co-inventor of one patent and is academic promoter of two spin-off companies\, Epilog and ADx Neurosciences. \nHe is (co-)author on 432 PubMed-cited papers in international peer-reviewed journals and 19 book chapters which results in 35.228 citations without self-citations\, and a h-index of 82.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a high-level policy event co-hosted by MEP Romana Jerković (S&D\, Croatia) and MEP Tomislav Sokol (EPP\, Croatia): “Headway – A New Roadmap in Brain Health: Focus Epilepsy”. The event will take place on Wednesday\, 2 July 2025\, from 14:30 to 16:30 CEST at the European Parliament\, Room SPAAK 4B1\, in Brussels. \nAs Europe grapples with ongoing geopolitical instability and the lasting impact of recent health crises\, building long-term resilience requires more than just economic reform. It demands a renewed focus on brain health. Prioritising neurological well-being is not only key to improving individual quality of life but also essential for preserving Europe’s social cohesion\, economic innovation\, and global competitiveness. \nThis event will bring together policymakers\, clinicians\, researchers\, patient advocates and industry leaders to address epilepsy\, one of the most common yet under-recognised neurological conditions in Europe. Despite affecting millions\, up to 40% of epilepsy patients still lack access to adequate treatment. The discussion will emphasise the urgent need for inclusive\, data-driven policy and integrated care pathways\, while situating epilepsy within the broader brain health agenda. \nDuring the event\, the latest edition of the Headway report will be presented\, developed by Angelini Pharma in partnership with TEHA Group. Since its inception in 2017\, the Headway initiative has championed a cross-sectoral approach to brain health\, addressing systemic challenges across healthcare\, education\, and the workplace. \nThe agenda will spotlight expert perspectives on the implementation of the WHO Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders across Europe. It will bring together a diverse range of voices\, including international patient organizations\, leading clinicians\, and senior EU policymakers. Notable contributions will come from figures such as MEP Vytenis Andriukaitis (S&D\, Lithuania)\, MEP András Tivadar Kulja (EPP\, Hungary)\, and MEP Aurelijus Veryga (ECR\, Lithuania)\, who will share their insights on how to translate global frameworks into concrete action within European health systems. \nThe European Brain Council (EBC) looks forward to being part of the event. DESCRIPTION:Programme of day 1Programme of day 2As part of the Global Brain Coalition\, the European Brain Council (EBC) will host a high-level side event in the framework of the Science Summit at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York City on 24-26 September 2025. \nIt is estimated that more than three billion people currently live with a neurological condition and 970 million with a mental health disorder worldwide. These conditions represent a high individual\, social and economic burden and contribute immensely to the global burden of disease – in fact\, as of 2024\, neurological conditions alone are now the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. The associated costs are placing mounting pressure on national fiscal budgets. Demographic changes—including shrinking working-age populations—are also reducing tax bases and exerting downward pressure on productivity and long-term economic growth. \nThe growing urgency to address this burden has catalysed a global movement to position brain health not only an issue of health or research\, but as a social and fiscal public policy issue as well\, with brain capital as a business and national competitiveness imperative. These priorities are now emerging as central to global conversations around public policy\, economic development\, and innovation. \n \nOver the last several years\, the need to place brain health and brain capital on the global agenda has gained critical momentum through a series of high-level convenings\, pilot programs\, and public-private partnerships. These efforts include regional breakthroughs such as Houston’s emerging brain health ecosystem; national brain health strategies now adopted by more than 20 countries; European Union initiatives led by the European Brain Council (EBC); and global coordination efforts such as the Brain Days at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)\, the Brain Health House at Davos\, the World Economic Forum’s Brain Economy Action Forum\, and the Business Collaborative for Brain Health. The 2025 Brain Days at UNGA80 build on this foundation—offering a strategic inflection point to sustain and scale action.
