DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Lausanne Workshop is the eleventh in a series of Lausanne-based annual Alzheimer’s convenings with a goal to stop Alzheimer’s. Over the past ten years\, Lausanne has become a highly curated platform for global Alzheimer’s stakeholders to identify challenges\, set solution paths\, measure progress and hold each other accountable to act. \nThe Lausanne Workshop is organized under the auspices of the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) and supported by The Global CEO Initiative on Alzheimer’s Disease (CEOi)\, Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) and World Economic Forum (WEF). It launched in 2014 as a response to the challenge articulated at the UK G8 Dementia Summit to stop Alzheimer’s by 2025. This goal was reinforced at the First WHO Ministerial Conference on Global Action Against Dementia in 2015. \nEBC will be present at the event. Stephanie Kramer\, Deputy Executive Director will take part in a panel discussion under the title “Preventative Power: Promoting Brain Health to Address the Alzheimer’s Crisis”.

SUMMARY:Advancing Global Collaboration for Dementia and Healthy Aging
DESCRIPTION:Side Event at the 2024 G7 Health Ministerial Meeting: Advancing Global Collaboration for Dementia and Healthy Aging EBC is pleased to collaborate with the Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative (DAC)\, who will be hosting event on the sidelines of the 2024 G7 Health Ministerial Meeting: Advancing Global Collaboration for Dementia and Healthy Aging. The event will take place on 8 October 2024 from 13:00-17:00 CET in Ancona\, Italy. \nAs the world’s population ages\, dementias including Alzheimer’s disease are among the most pressing global health challenges. The profound impacts of dementias are looming threats that will increasingly strain health systems\, societies\, and individuals. DAC recognizes and applauds the previous efforts and commitments made by governments of the G7 to address dementias. However\, the stark reality remains: the global community is not yet equipped to actualize and achieve these commitments. \nOn the sidelines of the G7 Health Ministerial meeting\, the premier stage for international collaboration on critical health issues\, the event aims to emphasize the continued need for global coordination and commitment to healthy aging\, brain health\, and addressing the global burden of dementias including Alzheimer’s disease. It will showcase the progress that is being made on all fronts in the fight to end Alzheimer’s\, including policy advances\, scientific innovations\, and improved care pathways. The event will convene high-level stakeholders – including government\, policy makers\, international organizations\, industry\, and civil society – around the objectives: \n\nReiterating the importance of a person-centric approach to developing new treatments and strengthening health systems in support of people living with dementias including Alzheimer’s Disease.\nHighlighting the progress countries have made since the 2023 G7 communiqué in Japan supported “policies and resources to care for people living with dementia\,” including on early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and on the development of new therapeutics.\nBuilding consensus on the urgent need for sustained global collaboration toward healthy aging and brain health\, including in addressing Alzheimer’s and dementia\, supporting the realization of national plans\, coordination\, and knowledge sharing at the global level.\n\nEBC looks forward to participating in this critical discussion: Frédéric Destrebecq\, EBC’s Executive Director\, will be speaking during the ‘Defining the Opportunities for Global Action’ panel alongside Chris Lynch (Alzheimer’s Disease International)\, Charlotte Refsum (Tony Blair Institute for Global Change)\, Wade Shen (Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health). The discussion will be moderated by George Vradenburg (Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative) and will take place at 16:10-16:50 CEST. Panelists will be sharing insights on how we can enable countries to build sustained global collaboration toward healthy ageing and brain health. \nThe Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative \nThe Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative (DAC) is a pioneering worldwide initiative to cure Alzheimer’s disease and improve brain health\, seeking to mirror the success of global efforts against infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS\, Covid\, and Malaria. DAC is extending global research beyond its current focus on traditional Western European ethnic populations into the highly diversified populations of the Global South\, where the vast majority of those with Alzheimer’s live. By introducing lower-cost screening and diagnostic tools as well as new treatment and prevention modalities in primary care and community health settings\, DAC is driving implementation of health system solutions that are appropriate for worldwide application. DAC also promotes the vital importance of brain health throughout the lifespan by addressing cardiometabolic and lifestyle factors\, especially in early and mid-life. Absent effective action at scale around the world\, by 2050\, more than 150 million families and half a billion people will be personally impacted by dementia\, creating a social\, financial\, economic\, and global security disaster of historic proportions. DESCRIPTION:EBC is please to take a part in “Building Brain Health in Europe” session at EANS Congress 2024. The session will take place on 13th of October 2024 from 9:00 till 12:00 in Hall 6 of the Venue in Sofia. \nAbout the session\nThis session\, organized by EANS\, will cover topics such as advocacy\, brain health imaging\, the brain tumours\, neurosurgery in psychiatry and traumatic brain injuries.   \nEBC will present the advocacy work in the brain space undertaken at the European level and explore not only the importance of the work being done but the potentials for strengthened collaboration and the needs going forward\, for the benefit of all within the brain space\, particularly with a spotlight on neurosurgery\, neurology and neurological conditions (including the clinicians that treat them and the patients that live with them).  \nSession will feature a series of presentations by prominent experts in the field of brain health. Prof Torstein R. Meling will chair the session. Speakers include Prof Thomas Berger\, Prof Suzanne Dickson\, Tarek Yousry\, Prof Johnny Duerinck\, Dr Niklas Marklund\, Majda Thurnher\, Dr Ricardo Chavarriaga\, and Dr Eric Suero Molina. Topics will cover various aspects of brain health\, including neuroradiology\, the impact of brain tumors\, traumatic brain injury\, and stroke\, as well as the role of neurosurgery in modern psychiatry. Prof Suzanne Dickson will put forward the role of EBC in the advocacy of Brain Health and Dr Ricardo Chavarriaga will explore the ethics of neuroprosthetics. \nEBC SpeakersSuzanne DicksonPresident\, European Brain Council Professor Suzanne L Dickson is a neurobiologist and Professor of Neuroendocrinology at the University of Gothenburg. She graduated with a Ph.D. in Neuroendocrinology from the University of Cambridge in 1993\, where she later became Senior Lecturer in Physiology. She is a leading figure in neuroendocrinology and works within many European Union and international organisations and societies to promote research\, facilitate grant funding and training of Early Career Scientists. Her research into the neurobiology of appetite aims to unravel neurobiological pathways that respond to orexigenic signals\, such as the hormone\, ghrelin\, and that drive feeding behaviours\, not only food intake but also food choice\, food anticipation\, food reward and food motivation. This work involves mostly preclinical studies and includes behavioural tasks\, viral vector mapping\, chemogenetics and RNAscope. She is Secretary and Executive Board member of the European College for Neuropsychopharmacology\, and also chairs ECNP’s Workshop for Early Career Scientists in Europe. She also is founder and co-chair of ECNP’s nutrition network and EBRA’s BRAINFOOD cluster. \nRicardo ChavarriagaGroup Lead\, Responsible AI Innovation Neuroscientist and public speaker in neurotechnologies\, artificial intelligence\, and responsible innovation. Dr Chavarriaga leads the Responsible AI Innovation group at at the Center for Artificial Intelligence of the Zürich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and is the head of the Swiss office of the Confederation of Laboratories for AI Research in Europe (CLAIRE). She is President of the European Brain Council and Secretary of the European College for Neuropsychopharmacology \nElena Moro is Professor of Neurology at Université Grenoble Alpes and at the Department of Psychiatry\, Neurology and Neurological Rehabilitation of CHU Grenoble in France. She graduated in medicine at the University of Trieste\, Italy\, and completed her residency in neurology at the Rome Catholic University. She then went on to complete a fellowship in movement disorders in Grenoble\, France. After receiving her PhD in neurosciences\, she joined the Division of Neurology at Toronto Western Hospital\, Canada\, as medical director of the surgical programme for movement disorders. In 2012\, she moved to Grenoble\, France\, where she is currently director of the Movement Disorders Center and head of the Department of Psychiatry\, Neurology\, Neurological Rehabilitation and Forensic Medicine. \nHer main research is focused on restoring brain function\, especially with deep brain stimulation. With these documentaries\, Sarah Moon Howe lays the foundations for a significant work\, the borders of the intimate\, transcending her experience to capture images into sounds. \nVinciane Quoidbach is Public Health and Policy Research Project Manager at the European Brain Council\, specializing in brain health impact assessments\, care and treatment pathway analysis\, and evidence-based policymaking. She is currently affiliated with the University of Warwick\, United Kingdom\, where she is pursuing an MSc in Neuroscience. Prior to her current position\, she served as an Advisor to the Belgian Federal Public Service Health and the Federal Minister of Health’s Cabinet\, where she was responsible for developing public health policies and regulations in the areas of cancer\, chronic diseases\, and rare diseases. Between 2021 and 2022 worked as team leader in the Medical Service of the European Commission. \nSince 2022 he works as Health counsellor at Spanish Permanent Representation and coordinated the Health area during the Spanish Presidency of the EU. \nAlexandra Heumber Perry is the Chief Executive Officer of Rare Diseases International\, the global alliance of Persons Living with a Rare Disease. She has dedicated her entire career to contribute improving healthcare policies to benefit people living with diseases\, with a particular focus in neglected and vulnerable people. She has over 20 years’ experience in global health with demonstrated capabilities in patient advocacy and multi-stakeholder partnership. Still very active in advocating for the patient community. \nVera Lipkovskaya is a public policy and project officer at NF Patients United\, with over 8 years of experience advocating for patients with rare diseases. She also served as Chief Project Design Officer at an AI company\, where she led the design and implementation of projects across more than 30 countries for various rare diseases and cancers. Through her work\, she advocates for patient-centric approaches in policymaking as well as for greater recognition of the role patient organisations play in shaping the healthcare landscape. Established in Glasgow in 2020 it is now used by >120 services in the UK and internationally. \nI come from a family affected by Huntingtons Disease (HD). My mother developed the disease throughout my adolescence and her disease had huge impact on the entire family. My brother passed away with HD 10 years ago and my sister died last year after suffering from various and steadily growing symptoms for more than 20 years. I have been engaged as a patient advocate and within the association for over 40 years. In 2010 I tested negative for the Huntington gene and learned that I was not at-risk to develop HD. The same year I joined the board of the European Huntington Association and since 2016 I have been the president and CEO. This position enables me to work full time for the community. I am also very much involved in advocacy and the neurology patient community through my position in the board of the European Federation of Neurological Associations (EFNA) since 2019 and have served as President since 2023. When the European Reference Networks was set up as an EU initiative in 2027\, I joined as patient advocate in the network for Rare Neurological Diseases (ERN-RND). A position I still hold and appreciate as the ERN`s are a crucial infrastructure of clinics and expertise in the RD space. \nI am educated as a teacher for people with learning difficulties and disabilities. DESCRIPTION:There are around nine million stroke survivors currently living in Europe. Upon being discharged from a hospital\, survivors and their families enter a world where support is usually undefined\, fragmented or non-existent\, and where cultural expectations dramatically impact quality of life and any success of ongoing recovery. SAFE understands the priority and attention given to the acute phase of stroke treatment. SUMMARY:EBC Brain Awareness Week Event 2025: Towards the establishment of national brain plans in Europe and beyond
DESCRIPTION:The momentum for national brain strategies is stronger than ever. On 18 March 2025\, the European Brain Council (EBC) held its annual Brain Awareness Week event\, titled “Brain Health Plans Summit: Towards the Establishment of National Brain Plans in Europe and Beyond”. Hosted by MEP Aurelijus Veryga (ECR\, LT)\, Deputy Coordinator of the European Parliament’s Public Health Committee\, the high-level event brought key stakeholders together from across the European Union and beyond to discuss best practices\, challenges\, and opportunities in advancing national brain plans. \nWith brain disorders being the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death in the world\, the need for coordinated national and international action has never been more pressing. While countries such as Switzerland\, Canada\, Norway\, Denmark\, and Finland have already implemented national brain strategies\, many others have set concrete short-term goals or are in the process of crafting their respective plans. The discussions that took place during the Brain Health Plans Summit underscored the importance of treating brain health as a policy priority rather than a fragmented collection of neurological and mental health challenges and sectoral approaches. \nA Global Policy Momentum in National Brain Plan Development\nAfter welcoming words from MEP Aurelijus Veryga and Claudio Bassetti (EBC\, Swiss Brain Health Plan)\, the event kicked off with Tarun Dua’s (World Health Organisation) presentation of the current WHO Action Plans\, which aim at improving the prevention\, treatment\, and management of brain disorders. These plans set out clear policy goals for Member States who committed to reaching them by 2030-2031. Such commitments emphasize the urgent need to establish national strategies and ensure coordinated efforts to reduce the burden posed by brain conditions\, neurological and mental alike. \n©️ Sylvain Crasset. \nBest Practices Outside of the European Union\nEmmanuel Chen (Singapore Memory Aging and Cognition Centre)\, Jennie Young (Canadian Brain Research Strategy)\, Henrik Peersen (Norwegian Brain Council) and Claudio Bassetti took the floor as representatives of countries which have successfully advanced the prioritization of brain health at national level\, to share their experiences in overcoming obstacles\, fostering cross-sectoral collaboration and securing commitment from policymakers. Alfred Njamnshi (BRAIN Initiative) illustrated Cameroon’s leadership in prioritising brain health across all policy areas and demonstrating the economic imperative of investing in brain health to support sustainable growth and innovation through a presentation of the Yaoundé Declaration on Brain Economy and Brain Capital. \nCase Study of the Nordics\, Spain and Poland\nSpain’s ongoing efforts to develop a national brain health strategy were discussed by Mara Dierssen (Spanish Brain Council) and Elvira Vacas Montero (Spanish Epilepsy Federation\, International Bureau for Epilepsy European Region)\, offering insights into the challenges of integrating brain health into national policy while associating people living with a brain condition. Poland’s early steps in leveraging its EU Presidency to establish its own national strategy underscored the importance of political leadership in driving change. Izabella Dessoulavy-Gladysz (Mental Power Foundation)\, Cezary Mazurek (Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center) & Kondrad Rejdak (Medical University of Lublin) also insisted on the crucial role of data and research infrastructures\, and the need to include clinical expertise in community-driven initiatives. The session on the Nordic experiences provided a powerful case study of how regional cooperation can enhance national efforts\, through showcasing examples of national strategies already in place shared by Henrik Peersen\, Mika Martikainen (Finnish Brain Council) and Morten Lorenzen (Danish Brain Council). \n©️ Sylvain Crasset. \nStrengthening the Research and Innovation Ecosystem\nAs brain conditions remain amongst the most complex conditions to understand and treat\, continued research and development in the brain space therefore remain crucial. Karin Hamberg (Lundbeck) illustrated how national initiatives can significantly accelerate research\, drive investment\, and enhance collaboration between stakeholders by presenting Lundbeck’s Lighthouse Life Science. Tomás Ryan (FENS Advocacy Committee)\, Agnese Cattaneo (Angelini Pharma) & Jan Schadrack (Roche) then discussed ways in which the EU could strengthen its efforts to foster the emergence of a European Brain Health Research & Innovation Ecosystem\, particularly through larger-scale initiatives such as the upcoming European Partnership for Brain Health. \nTowards an EU Coordination Plan for the Brain\nA fireside chat between MEP Tomislav Sokol (EPP\, CR) and Elena Moro (European Academy of Neurology) explored the case for an EU Coordination Plan for the Brain\, emphasizing the need for an integrated\, EU-wide approach to research\, policy\, and funding to address the growing burden of brain disorders and work towards brain-healthy societies. The panel concluded on a call to better streamline and align national regulations and policies\, as an essential step towards an ambitious EU Health Union. \nA Call for Continued Action\nThe event clearly demonstrated that\, while significant progress has been made in the past years\, sustained collaboration and further commitments are needed to advance national and international brain strategies. By fostering cross-border alliances and aligning efforts under a cohesive and ambitious EU Coordination Plan for the Brain\, stakeholders can drive meaningful policy change\, ensure adequate investment in research and innovation\, and ultimately improve the lives of the millions of Europeans living with a brain disorder. \nThe outcomes of this event will serve as a key building block for the upcoming strategic discussions such as the World Health Assembly\, the 80th United Nations General Assembly\, the 4th High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases\, the G7 and G20 meetings. SUMMARY:Rethinking Schizophrenia: Care Pathways | European Congress of Psychiatry
DESCRIPTION:EBC is pleased to have an e-poster viewing “Rethinking Pathways: Innovative Approaches to Identify Individuals Experiencing First-Episode Psychosis and Connect Them to Care” at the upcoming European Congress of Psychiatry\, set to take place on 5-8 April 2025 in Madrid (Spain). The e-poster EPP178 will be presented from 12:30 – 13:15 on 6 April 2025 in the e-poster area (station 13). \nThe e-poster will feature the second phase of the Rethinking schizophrenia project\, co-created by the European Brain Council (EBC) and the European Psychiatric Association (EPA)\, and will aim to examine health gains and societal impacts resulting from optimal healthcare interventions in comparison with current care or inadequate treatment. Additionally\, this projects convert data evidence to policy recommendations on how to improve the care pathways. \nWith a typical onset during late adolescence or early adulthood\, schizophrenia requires lifelong treatment\, combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Early symptom recognition and timely interventions can greatly enhance functional recovery\, however recent reports have identified significant gaps in access to timely assessment and shared decision-making\, compounded by the unprecedented demand for mental healthcare among young people. Such high demands create challenges for health care services in delivering not only timely and evidence-based care but also safe and person-centred\, as recommended by the World Health Organization. There is a need to improve prevention and care of young individuals with first episode psychosis (the onset of schizophrenia) to safely and effectively transition between various types of care tailored according to individual needs. \nTo address these issues\, the Rethinking Schizophrenia project is conducting an analysis of patient care pathways across nine European countries (Belgium\, Denmark\, France\, Germany\, Hungary\, Italy\, Poland\, Spain\, and the UK). This project aims to put forward an in-depth patient care pathway analysis in order to define specific strategies to advance the prevention and treatment of schizophrenia. Findings will inform policy recommendations to enhance care pathways for young individuals experiencing first-episode psychosis. \nPavel MohrVice-President\, Czech Psychiatric AssociationGraduated from the Medical Faculty\, Charles University Prague in 1990 (M.D.); in 2001 obtained his Ph.D. in Neurosciences.\, in 2015 was appointed a Professor of Psychiatry at the Charles University in Prague. Since 1991\, prof. Mohr works at the National Institute of Mental Health\, Czechia (formerly the Prague Psychiatric Center)\, currently as the Clinical Director. From 1995 to 1998\, he was a visiting scientist at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research in Orangeburg\, New York. Dr. Mohr is a Professor of Psychiatry at the 3rd Medical Faculty\, Charles University\, teaching pre-graduate medical students in psychiatry and postgraduate students in the PhD program of Neurosciences. Between 2006 and 2009 was a Faculty member of the Vienna School of Clinical Research. Member of the EPA since 2000\, (since 2023 member of the EPA Board\, current Chair of the Psychopharmacology Section\, member of the Section Neurodevelopmental disorders across the lifespan); representative of the Czech Psychiatric Association at the Council of the NPAs EPA; since 2012 member of the European Network Adult ADHD; member of the European Group for Research in Schizophrenia (EGRIS); current Vice-President of the Czech Psychiatric Association (President 2019-2022)\, Board Member of the Czech Neuro-psychopharmacological Society (President 2009-2011). His main research interests are Clinical Psychiatry and Neurosciences; prof. SUMMARY:Mental Health Summit: Prevention and Recovery in Modern Society
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of Mental Health Week\, starting on May 19\, 2025\, Dr. András Kulja\, MEP\, Vice Chair of ENVI\, and SANT Vice Coordinator\, together with MEP Zoltán Tarr\, Head of Delegation\, and CULT Vice-Coordinator\, will host a two-day summit dedicated to mental health and recovery in modern society. Following the SANT Committee’s mission to Ukraine on the topic of mental health\, MEPs will report back to the European Parliament to share their experiences and insights from the field. \nPrevention and Recovery in Modern Society\nThe summit will bring together policymakers\, mental health professionals\, cultural leaders\, and civil society organisations to explore how mental health challenges can be addressed in a rapidly changing and crisis-affected world. It will particularly emphasise support for vulnerable populations\, trauma-informed rebuilding\, and the role of culture and the arts in mental health recovery. \nThe discussions will aim to contribute to the ongoing EU policy debate on mental health as a societal priority\, following the Commission’s Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health. DESCRIPTION:The World Health Assembly (WHA)\, taking place in May 2025\, presents an important opportunity to emphasize the role of science and research in driving progress on global health priorities. This year’s agenda highlights the urgent need to advance universal health coverage (UHC)\, reduce health inequities\, respond to both emerging and ongoing disease challenges\, and reinforce health systems worldwide. \nAchieving these aims will require putting scientific progress to work and encouraging greater collaboration across sectors. Over the past decade\, research and innovation have significantly improved health outcomes\, through better diagnostics\, treatments\, and prevention. SUMMARY:Beyond Mental Health: A Brain Health Approach to Schizophrenia Prevention and Care

For the Polish description\, please see below. \nBeyond Mental Health: A Brain Health Approach to Schizophrenia Prevention and Care\nSchizophrenia remains a major public health challenge\, with significant personal\, social and economic consequences. Traditional approaches to schizophrenia focus primarily on mental health interventions\, yet emerging evidence underscores the need for a brain health perspective—one that acknowledges the interplay between biological\, psychological and social determinants. The event Beyond Mental Health: A Brain Health Approach to Schizophrenia Prevention and Care\, building on the second and third phase of the Rethinking Schizophrenia Project\, will explore how early intervention\, innovative treatments and social policy reforms can reshape schizophrenia care across Europe. The event will take place on 5 June 2025 in Warsaw (Poland) and will be held under the patronage of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the Polish Psychiatric Association. \nThe aim of the roundtable is to discuss and present country-specific findings\, illustrating barriers and best practices in implementing comprehensive care pathways in Poland. Experts will discuss youth-focused key policy recommendations\, including early detection programs\, access to innovative pharmacological and psychosocial treatments\, integrated care models and digital health solutions.
